Cruise visitors here in record numbers

ships. Record numbers of passengers for 1995 arrived on board cruise ships Horizon and Dreamward .

Horizon which arrived from New York on Monday with 1,469 passengers on board just beat out Dreamward which arrived the same day with 1,340 passengers. Both were carrying their highest numbers of passengers so far this year, said a spokesman from Meyer Agencies.

Also this week Meridian arrived with 1,206 passengers from Philadelphia. She berthed at King's Wharf, Dockyard on Tuesday and sails this afternoon.

From New York Song of America arrived with 1,406 passengers the same day. She moved from Penno's Wharf, St. George's to Hamilton yesterday morning and departs tomorrow, a spokesman from John S. Darrell said.

The beleaguered Royal Majesty that ran aground off Boston two weeks ago was absent from Bermuda's waters this week but a spokesman from the Miami office of Majesty Cruise Line confirmed the ship would be back in St. George's on Tuesday as normal.

With the imminent closure of the US Naval Base, US tug Morania 1 arrived from New York on Sunday towing a 405-foot barge, Morania 430 . The barge will deliver fuel from the Base to a depot in Norfolk, Virginia, a spokesman from Meyer Agencies said.

Two US Navy 137 metre-long frigates arrived this week for refuelling. USS Nicholas berthed at Dockyard on Saturday and departed the same day. USS Stark , bombed during the Gulf War, arrived early on Tuesday morning and also departed the same day.

The US Navy's container ship, Strong Cajun berthed at Marginal Wharf on Sunday with three full containers and 46 empties. She sailed the same day. In general container ship news, Somers Isles arrived on Monday morning from Fernandino Beach, Florida with 69 containers including ten reefers, four boats, two cars and a truck on board. Also on board were 15 bundles of steel decking, one bundle of plywood and airport equipment.

Bermuda Islander arrived a day ahead of schedule on Monday afternoon from Salem, New Jersey with 71 containers including seven reefers and six heat exchangers on board. She sailed the following day.

Oleander arrived on schedule this week with 157 containers of which 40 were refrigerated, said Mr. Barry Brewer of Container Ship Management. Other cargo included eight 40-foot racing sail boats, a barge and boat, a crane, two mafis and three trailers with construction and steel material.

A cargo ship from Port au Prince, Haiti arrived on Thursday morning with 96 cars and 82 cases of parts. Pioneer Leader sailed for Nassau the same day.

British motor yacht Intrepid 2 is currently berthed at Penno's Wharf after arriving in Bermuda on Sunday. The 168-foot long vessel stopped here en route to Gibraltar from Miami for fuel.
