A tugboat from the Chilean navy dislodged the Professor Khromov ship from a shoal in the Neumayer channel in the straits of Gerlache on Sunday night.

Thirty-six European tourists were transferred to another Russian boat in the area, the Alla Tarasova . Their nationalities were not known.

The Professor Khromov ran aground Sunday near the Russian Antarctic research station Bellinsgauzen, a spokesman for the Russian Weather and Environment Monitoring Service said in Moscow.

Ship sinks near Sicily PALERMO, Sicily (AP) -- A Turkish cargo ship sank in rough water today between Sardinia and Sicily, Italy's two biggest islands. At least four crew members died and one was missing, Palermo port officials said.

Six crew members aboard the Onur-K were rescued by an Italian ferry in the area, including one who was injured.
