Globalstar expands service into 18 African countries

Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd., a Bermuda company, acts as general partner of Globalstar L.P.
Globalstar said it had entered into agreements with two regional telecommunications service providers, UK-based Globaltouch Communications Holdings Inc. and Kenya-based Mobile Telecommunications Africa, who have formed companies that intend to offer Globalstar service to 12 African nations.
The former will service Nigeria, Togo, Ghana and Benin while the latter will service Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.
In a related development, a Globalstar founding partner, TESAM, has signed an agreement with Globalstar to act as service provider in six African countries: Cameroon Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast and Senegal, as well as Columbia and South America.
These additions raise the number of countries, where Globalstar's worldwide network of telecommunications service providers and strategic partners have agreed to act as Globalstar service providers, to 73 from 54.
The "globalstar project'' includes the design, construction and operation of a low earth orbit (LEO) digital telecommunications system.
California-based Globalstar, was founded by Loral Corp. and Qualcomm, Inc.
