Health officials meet
health reforms.
Although slightly disrupted by the bad weather, representatives from Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos turned up for the meeting.
Held under the banner of the Health Sector Reform project, the aim is to establish an efficient and effective health system on the islands, although representatives recognised that Bermuda's was already in good shape.
Mr. Bob Smith, the Dependent Territories regional secretary, said: "The project was started in 1993 and was designed to provide advice on specific areas of the delivery of a health system, its organisation and monitoring.'' The project is being funded by the British Government through the Overseas Development Agency and its progress is being monitored by Keele University, in the UK.
Including Bermuda, five territories are involved, the others being Anguilla, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands.
A meeting of Health Ministers was also due to take place in Bermuda last week but was called off because of the weather conditions and the problems caused by the recent Hurricane Luis.
"The islands we are dealing with are much smaller than Bermuda and the systems and structures are not as advanced as Bermuda,'' added Mr. Smith.
