Inside LOM is lovely

new LOM building. Her involvement began December 1998 and she explains her role in detail: "As the designer on the LOM project, it was my responsibility to address the physical fit of the client's company into the interior areas, while responding to the growth and ongoing expansion of the company.

She explained that the dynamic nature of LOM made changes necessary throughout the process as the company continues to grow.

"Changes are still being planned. We coordinated the finishes, budget preparations and specification for furnishings.

A large project of this sort comes with challenges and Mrs. Murdoch said: "The greatest challenge of this project has been responding to the changing needs of the client. LOM's rapid growth has resulted in internal reorganising and the relocations of work groups. The floor plates are small and so the space planning has been critical.'' The interior is light and bright and the "look'' is quite open due to the generous use of glass. Mrs. Murdoch says this allows the interior areas to take advantage of the exterior light and views.

"It expands the interior perceived size of the open work areas and the offices themselves. The wood, stainless steel and stone palette that is established in the lobby is carried through to the office floors,'' she explained.

One of the most interesting elements of the project has been working with new clients and understanding the working of their business. Mrs. Murdoch said: "Scott, Brian and Malcolm were very good to work with. They knew what they wanted to achieve and because they are decisive, the work went smoothly.

Martin Bolton of Bermuda Project Managers Ltd. was also a key person in getting decisions made.'' Bermuda's international companies receive a lot of attention in our community in relation to their successes and growth. One of the most gratifying aspects of this project for Mrs. Murdoch was her involvement with a truly successful local company who have built a landmark structure in the heart of Hamilton.

She concluded: "While the exterior of the building reflects an established secure image, the Lines' have taken a contemporary approach to the appearance of the interiors, which reflect the youth and energy that Scott and Brian Lines bring to their company.

Mrs. Murdoch obtained her Bachelor of Interior Design from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1976 and worked for two architectural firms prior to working with her husband since 1995.

She is a member of the Bermuda Society of Interior Designers since 1984 and has been involved with major corporate projects for Centre Reinsurance, Zurich International Bermuda, XL Insurance, and the Bank of Bermuda to list a few.

She has been married to Ian Murdoch for ten years and they enjoy scuba diving and underwater photography in their free time.
