Island is phone crazy -- it's official
world, according to a recent report from the World Bank.
The 33rd Edition of The World Bank Atlas records that Bermuda had 857 telephone lines per 1,000 people in 1999. Next behind Bermuda was Luxembourg, with 724 lines per thousand. The United States ranked behind several countries, with only 664 lines per thousand.
However, the report said the United States had the highest penetration of personal computers, with 510.5 per 1,000 of population. The statistics for Bermuda indicated 436.8 computers per thousand.
The capitalisation of the Bermuda Stock Exchange was noted at $1.3 billion, although this was based on data from previous years. The capitalisation of the United States' markets was recorded as $16.64 trillion.
The report also listed economic and infrastructure statistics such as level of private fixed investment, central government deficit, military expenditure, electricity consumption and paved roads. However, only three statistics were recorded for Bermuda.
