But success is measured in different ways on Front Street, said many of the local stall owners interviewed by The Royal Gazette .

A Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute stall near Number One Shed reached many visitors and locals this year but did not make much money.

"This year went very well.'' said BUEI volunteer Gary, who worked the stall this season with other volunteers. "Everyone has been enthusiastic -- and a lot of people have learned about BUEI.'' Only one stall down, a young woman was selling African beads.

"I've been here for three years,'' she said, "It's not always about profit -- its about meeting people.'' Others happily agreed with that statement.

Joan Thompson of the Twin Art stall said: "If you get people involved, they try and care about tourism.

While The Royal Gazette was speaking with Mrs. Thompson a visiting couple stopped by, said hello and purchased two prints.

"They've been here before,'' Mrs. Thompson said.

"Yea, you should have seen us earlier before we spent all the money.'' said the husband before the couple disappeared into the gathering crowd on Front Street.
