New Somers Isles shows off its paces
The new and speedier version of the Somers Isles container ship arrived in Bermuda on Monday having had the chance to shave a whole day of its sailing time from Florida.
Although basically the same as the previous vessel, which bowed out last week after serving the Island for 14 years, the new vessel is around five knots faster.
It could have arrived on Sunday morning but a berth was not available for its cargo of 97 containers, five boats and 71 bundles of timber and steel and a vehicle.
The vessel, captained by Glenn Wrede, will return to Florida tomorrow afternoon.
Celebrity Cruises' Zenith arrived in Hamilton on Monday with its highest numbers of passengers so far this season.
Making the trip from New York were 1,656 people. The ship moves to St.
George's today before heading back to the Big Apple tomorrow.
Norwegian Crown arrived in St. George's from New York on Monday with 1,220 passengers before moving to Hamilton yesterday and heading back Stateside tomorrow afternoon.
Norwegian Majesty arrived in St. George's from Boston with around 1,450 passengers yesterday and will head back on Friday.
Horizon also arrived yesterday. She arrived in Kings' Wharf, Dockyard with 1,628 passengers and will transfer to Hamilton tomorrow afternoon before heading back to New York on Friday afternoon.
The Nordic Empress also arrived in St. George's yesterday and will take her 1,700-plus passengers to Hamilton today before heading back to New York on Friday.
The cargo ship Bermuda Islander will dock in Hamilton from New Jersey tomorrow laden with 123 containers, including 28 refrigerated ones, as well as a boat.
The Oleander arrived on Sunday with 45 refrigerated containers, 130 dry containers and ten road containers, containing building materials.
Also on board the Container Ship Management vessel were 29 cars, one truck and two cranes. It headed back to Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, yesterday.
