to the world's largest communications network, has 300 users on line, according to the Bermuda Report newsletter.
The winter 1994 newsletter, produced by BIBA (Bermuda International Business Association), cited the Internet electronic information system as a link to 25,000 networks and databases in 137 countries with over 20 million users.
Mr. Tony Harriott, manager of internetworking services with IBL, a division of BSL Holdings, said he expects the number of on-line Island users participating on the network to soon be over 1,000.
The 300 users who are up and running have been connected to the service within the past two weeks.
"We are currently working on an Internet-ready PC in conjunction with BSL.
Customers will get the PC, with modem and Internet software ready to take out of the box, turn the computer on, click on some icons and be on the Internet network,'' Mr. Harriott continued.
"For people with a PC and a modem, we now have same day connection to the Internet,'' he said.
IBL is also approaching retailers about getting them to list merchandise on the Internet.
BIBA's four-page quarterly report, as well as mention of Internet, included an introduction by BIBA chairman, Mr. Cummings Zuill, a question and answer with Mr. V.V. Veeder, arbitration specialist with the London law chambers of Essex Court, an Island news digest, an overview of the growth in Bermuda's insurance industry, BIBA hotline information, industry contacts and a conference calender.
