The 747 Martinair, a Dutch carrier, was en route to Cancun when it landed at the Island's airport to check on Hurricane Roxanne. It stayed for about one hour before leaving.

It was the second plane to make an unscheduled stop in Bermuda in two days after a United Airlines 757 landed when one of its two engines had to be switched off as a precaution.

On Tuesday, as the plane was about 150 miles south of Bermuda, the Captain reported a problem with one engine saying he had decided to turn it off.

He landed the jet, with 113 passengers on board, and it was decided a new engine was needed, which was flown in from America yesterday. The majority of passengers were due to depart yesterday for New York.

Mr. John Williams, manager of air operations, said the landing was only a precaution. "No-one was in danger,'' he said.
