Satellite dish may be on BII's menu

training and education for the insurance and reinsurance community, is considering the installation of a satellite dish to beam in further courses and programmes.

BII Director of training and education, Peter Doyles, said, "We are looking at the possibility of receiving teleconferences at the BII. We are still investigating the feasibility of a satellite receiving dish, but it would depend on things like how many teleconferencing seminars in insurance we could receive.'' Meanwhile, the Risk & Insurance Management Society (RIMS) wants to use the Internet and other distance learning tools to provide risk managers across Canada and the US, and others, with educational opportunities.

RIMS director of professional development, Amy Geffen, Ph.D. told members of the insurance community at the BII yesterday of a plan to develop next year a new graduate-level designation, the Fellow in Risk Management (FRM).

Successful candidates would have to pass seven examinations in addition to the three required for the existing designation, Associate in Risk Management (ARM).

RIMS and the BII are discussing the possibility of a liaison that may bring that and other training material to Bermuda, while using the Internet to make local expertise available in their forum.

Mr. Doyles said, "RIMS sees Bermuda as a concentration of expertise in risk management. The companies here have been bringing in top people in managing risk. Bermuda is on the leading edge in methods of managing risk.

"Companies internationally are always looking at what is new in this area.

RIMS wants to tap into the resource we have in Bermuda. We want to tap into the educational resources that are provided to the various chapters of RIMS across North America.

"Both RIMS and the BII are educational institutions looking to broaden the scope of information they can supply.''
