Senator slams airline food
remember, according to a Senator.
Senate Opposition Leader Milton Scott told members of the Senate that often holidaymakers heading into the Island from the US were treated to a picnic lunch but deserved better.
He told of a recent flight on Delta Airlines, where at Atlanta airport he was handed a picnic lunch to take on the plane. This was compared to days gone by when some airlines used to have silver service on their flights, he said.
"It is sending the wrong message,'' he said.
Government Senate Leader E.T. (Bob) Richards said if you compared the service between some airlines to that of Air Canada, it was like "the difference between day and night''.
Sen. Yvette Swan said that even though airlines wanted to save money they should think a little more about the service they provide.
VIOLENCE DEPLORED Violence deplored Trouble at soccer matches must be outlawed at all costs, members of the Senate heard.
Sen. Terry Lister was speaking after a disturbance at a weekend match between North Village and Vasco Da Gama.
Sen. Lister said: "We have had too many incidents over the last two years, we need to deal with this specific incident. There should be no reason for fans to interfere with players and nor should players feel threatened by the crowd.
"When does it get to the stage where I don't want my son in the league? This is our national sport, we put a lot of money behind it. This needs to be addressed and we need to send a serious message to the fans that their behaviour must be exemplary.'' ANNUAL FEES INCREASED Annual fees increased A bill which will see extra revenue for the Government has been passed.
The Companies Amendment Act 1998 increases various tax and fee charges, and raises penalties for late payments.
Sen. Alan Marshall said some of the annual fees had not been increased since 1996 and the increases were in line with Government fees.

AMENDMENTS PASSED Amendments passed A change in the law will help Bermuda attract more insurance business -- some of which it has been losing to Caribbean islands.
New legislation that will enable firms and individuals not in the insurance industry to invest in insurance derivatives was passed by the Senate on Monday night.
The Insurance Amendment Act 1998 will mean that Bermuda will be at the forefront of the marketplace and can attract companies that previously might had located in the Cayman Islands, for example.
Sen. Alan Marshall said the bill was important as the industry had become aware of the importance of major natural disasters and the potential cost implications of such happenings.
DECIISON LAMENTED Decision lamented The lack of sponsorship for Miss Bermuda to compete in the Miss Universe pageant was lamented by the Senate.
Sen. Neletha Butterfield said it was a shame that Joanne Darrell couldn't be helped by her own country when she had done so much to put it on the map.
Miss Darrell had been making personal appearances in Canada, on behalf of the tourism department and had set a good example to the young, she said.
It was reported last week that some of the reasons given for the decision not to send a representative to the Miss Universe pageant were lack of financial support and the politics of the contests.
