Students told achievements unlimited if they work hard
Youngsters attending the third annual Junior Youth to Youth conference yesterday learned that there is no limit to what they can achieve, if they are willing to work hard.
This lesson was clearly demonstrated by a variety of local entertainers who performed for the hundreds of children at the conference at Harrington Sound Primary School.
And it was underscored by three of America's young television stars.
Sisters `Hillary' and `Ashley' of CBS's Fresh Prince of Bel Air and `Laura' from ABC's Family Matters all told the crowd of nine- and ten-year-olds that it took more than talent to get where they are today.
The female stars, who all began their show business career at an early age, stressed that success in anything requires hard work and commitment.
They also each told stories about getting started.
Listening with fascination and admiration, the students from the Island's Primary Five and Six classes could not wait to ask about the love interest of each star's character.
Questions about `Laura's' feelings for her pestering, wiz-kid neighbour `Steve Urkel' came up several times. And one youngster ventured to ask if the teen star would consider marrying a member of Youth to Youth.
"She's (Laura) really pretty,'' and "Hillary talks the way she usually talks'' were among the common comments made by the youngsters after the rap session with the stars.
Three students, who were clearly impressed by the actresses, said they are more eager than ever to pursue their show business dreams.
Ten-year-old Carissa Darrell, nine-year-old Tiffany Tucker and ten-year-old Kai Miller said they now realise that "if you want to get into show business, you have to try and work hard''.
In addition to meeting the stars, students were treated to entertainment by local school groups, face painting, Hip Hop dancing, and a Fortune Teller Corner.
One of the conference organisers, Mrs. Althea Overbey, said the conference which was officially opened by Lady Langley "has been a worthy cause''.
She said a variety of young entertainers were invited, including the Cedar Grove Gospel Choir, the Menhuin Society, and Bermuda Institute's Steel Band, because "we want to help these kids by showing them that they're not limited''.
Mrs. Overbey also thanked parents and other members of the community for supporting the event.
"We've had tremendous support from parents and (school) counsellors,'' she said. "They have been responsible for every facet of the programme. It's really been quite gratifying to have the support that I have.'' She particularly thanked Belmont Hotel for providing free accommodation for the stars and their entourage; American Airlines for providing first-class round-trip tickets; and the Paget Lions for providing lunch.
Each student also received personally-autographed photos of the television stars.
