Subs surface in Bermuda waters

He explained they each dropped off a crew member in "humanitarian'' transfers and those crewmen flew straight home to visit loved ones who had been taken ill.

And Mr. Southern said the USS Stephen W. Groves -- a Perry class frigate -- would be at the Flagship Berth in Dockyard on Sunday where it was due to take on provisions and fuel.

It would sail later the same day and rejoin the Spruance class destroyer USS Stump which would be waiting offshore.

In cruise ship news, Meyer Agencies spokesman Stephen Paynter reported that the Regal Empress arrived from New York on Tuesday and anchored in Grassy Bay with 1,052 passengers. She left that night for Newport, Rhode Island.

He added that the Dreamward arrived in St. George's on Monday with 1,428 passengers and shifted to Hamilton on Tuesday.

She was due to depart today for New York along with the Zenith which also arrived on Monday but berthed in Hamilton.

The Zenith and her 1,682 passengers shifted to St. George's yesterday morning.

And he said the Meridian arrived on Tuesday from New York carrying 1,351 passengers and berthed at King's Wharf in Dockyard. She was due to leave tomorrow afternoon.

Mr. Southern reported that the Song of America arrived with 1,496 passengers from New York on Tuesday and berthed in St. George's along with the Royal Majesty which arrived from Boston with 1,145 passengers.

Elsewhere, Mr. Paynter said the Bermuda Islander arrived from Salem, New Jersey with 80 containers, seven of which were refrigerated on Monday and sailed the following day.

He added that the Somers Isles was not due in from Florida until Sunday.

And Container Ship Management vice president Robert Lewis reported that the Oleander arrived from Port Elizabeth, New Jersey on Sunday with 142 dry containers and 37 reefers.

He said a 40 ft container and road trailer, a 40-foot and a 30-foot maffi and 14 cars were also off loaded from the vessel before it departed on Tuesday.

BERMUDA ISLANDER -- Arrived with 80 containers on Monday.
