Telco wants to untangle lines of communication
Telecommunications, the Hon. Grant Gibbons, seeking clarification on a number of points involving the latest recommendations from the Telecommunications Commission.
In particular, Telco is interested in the recommendation that they be allowed to own and operate their own international facilities in accordance with its licence application.
General manager and secretary, Mr. Ernest Pacheco, in a letter to shareholders, has indicated that the telephone company wants more information.
In that letter, he also announced the quarterly dividend to the end of December remained at $0.55 a share.
But he said,"There are also a number of recommendations for competition in both local and international communications in Bermuda. There are many details to be worked out with the commission and we have written to the Minister requesting that he seek further clarification (from the commission) on a number of points.'' The report, handed down in December, is the second, and a substantially revised, report from the commission, which first argued last June to deny significant competition in the international telecommunications sphere from a third party, TeleBermuda International, which wants to link Bermuda to another fibre optic submarine telecommunications link. That position has now changed and TeleBermuda and Telco, it has been recommended, should be given permission to compete with Cable & Wireless.
