Tyrell steps up to top PLP job
up to the top job.
And he said his mission is to prepare the party to fight the next General Election.
Pensions consultant Mr. Tyrell said: "I would certainly say over the next couple of years while we're in Government and prior to the next General Election, my job is to get the party organisation on an even keel so when we're ready for the election, both parts of the machine will be as well oiled as possible.
"My role is basically the party and giving the MPs the support they need from the party.'' Party stalwart Mr. Tyrell, who has just taken over from Walter Roban who is leaving the Island for two years of study, was previously Assistant General Secretary.
He has been appointed to the post, not elected as normal, but will stand for election at the annual party conference next month.
Mr. Tyrell said: "I've been with the PLP for years, but I've always worked in the branches.
"I was the campaign chairman for the last election and I've worked on sub-committees.
"I'm certainly not a new person on the block, but I did keep a relatively low profile because of my other interests.'' Mr. Tyrell added: "I hope -- if all goes well -- that I will be elected at the conference.'' He said: "I'm basically a party person and I would like to see how I could improve ourselves, whether the image or the administration.
"I feel I bring a wealth of experience to the role and something valuable to it.''
