Being proprietor of Eden does not mean being confined to a back office, passing on directions to managers and supervisors without having contact with
Mrs. Valerie Nearon endeavours to maintain a constant presence amongst her many clients.
"My philosophy is `hands on','' she says. "Whenever I am there I do receptionist work. If I see that the client needs a cup of coffee, I'll get them coffee. I sweep the floor. When one of the stylists has just finished cutting a client's hair, and she's still busy, I'll take the broom in hand and sweep the floor.'' Mrs. Nearon also takes pains to see the client is comfortable. "I sit down and talk to the clients,'' she says. "I try to find out how they feel about the business. If there's something that I can possibly do to improve on the business, I listen. I'm not sitting back in an office -- matter of fact, my office is like a little clothes closet! "Most of my paperwork is done at home. The little office here is just for the minor things that I have to do. I am out in the salon going around and doing things. I do towels -- anything that I can do, I do it. Anything that I can do to keep the customers happy, and to improve the service, I do.'' Partner and business consultant husband Leon says Eden is definitely "individual-oriented''.
"We are open seven days a week,'' he said. "We want to have a salon that's open -- a salon that's convenient for the customer. That's our basic philosophy.''
