EXEL CEO elected to college board

recently was elected to the College of Insurance's board of directors.

Mr. O'Hara, who is also chairman, president and CEO of X.L. Insurance Company Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of EXEL, was among three new board members elected to the New York college's board earlier this month.

As well as Mr. O'Hara, trustees elected Mr. Constantine (Dinos) Iordanou, president and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Zurich-American Insurance Group, and E.A.G. Manton, senior advisor at American International Group (AIG), and a director of the Starr Foundation.

Mr. O'Hara, formerly director, senior vice president and Chief Underwriting Officer of Trenwick Group, Inc. and a founding principal, opened up that company's Bermuda office in 1979.

He served as the first president of the Bermuda Independent Underwriters Association and has been active in several Government committees, like the Insurance Advisory Committee and the Insurance Admissions Committee, and had chaired the Council of Advisory Committees.

Mr. O'Hara is also a director of Mid Ocean Ltd., as well as the Captive Fixed Income Fund, and a trustee of the Angus Robinson, Jr. Memorial Foundation.

Mr. Iordanou, who holds a degree in aerospace engineering from New York University, joined Zurich-American in 1992 as president of Zurich-American Specialties division and has served as president of the commercial casualty division of Berkshire Hathaway Group and was a senior vice president with AIG.

Mr. Manton joined AIG in 1933 in the US coming from Earls Colme, England to join American International Underwriters (AIU) as an underwriter.

In 1942, Mr. Manton was named president of AIU and from 1969 to 1975 held the position of chairman.

He has also been a director of AIG and various subsidiaries.

Through its centres for professional education and international insurance studies, the college provides education training and consulting services to industry, governments, and regulators, in insurance, management, reinsurance, finance, global insurance, risk management and other special topics.

The College of Insurance, located in New York's financial district, includes four floors of residence halls, classroom and conference space and the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library, which houses the largest and most comprehensive insurance collection in the world, according to a college release.

The College of Insurance, which offers bachelors degrees in Business Administration, Finance, Insurance and Actuarial Science, and Master of Business Administration degrees in Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, and Actuarial Science, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is chartered by the New York State Department of Education.
