Furbert in business to impart skills to others

Skilled: Eunice Furbert draws a template onto newsprint that she will use to make a woman' s blouse at her home where she operates her business M&M Contemporary.

Imparting her skills to other people has been a big part of Eunice Fermin Furbert's life since she moved to Bermuda 20 years ago.

For Ms Furbert, who left the Dominican Republic to relocate to the Island in 1989, set up her own business called M&M Contemporary teaching embroidery and tailoring courses in 2002 and has never looked back since.

She also offers Spanish classes for beginners to advanced levels from her home in Sandy's, as well as doing orders, alterations and repairs on everything from clothing, cushions and drapes to wedding dresses and school outfits.

Ms Furbert said her enterprise, which in Spanish stands for Maestra Y Modista Contemporanea and literally means teacher and contemporary stylist, schools students in the art of embroidery, tailoring and sign making from level one to three (four for signs) over a one-year course.

"I do signs, dress making, crochet, knitting and hand and machine embroidery, as well as teaching Spanish as a language," she said.

Having graduated from college with diplomas in the various skills, Ms Furbert was keen to pass on her talents to willing pupils and a desire to experience a different culture brought her to Bermuda in 1989, where she later settled and married and established her business soon after, having worked for a number of clothes designers, including Island Embroidery for three years, where she learnt how to use a computerised embroidery machine.

Embroidery, tailoring and sign making courses costs $55 for two hours, while Spanish classes are $70 for a one-and-a-half hour session.
