GPS walking tours launch in Dockyard

Visitors can now find their way around and discover some of Bermuda's hidden treasures thanks to a new GPS guided walking tour system launched in Dockyard.

The device, which was first introduced in Hamilton and St. George's by Bermuda Walking Tours last year, provides everything from information on history, shopping and Island culture to stories, all in English and Spanish.

The GPS Ranger™ is a handheld GPS triggered computer device that delivers walking tour experiences and on-site interpretation, including narratives, musical soundtracks, photography, text, and interactive maps based on the location of the user.

Visitors can follow stories that take place in gardens, historic forts and on sightseeing tours that offer Bermuda's top locations for photos, panoramic views, and historic walks.

They can also now learn about the people, places and events that have shaped the Island's history and modern culture.

Walter Stevens, managing director of Bermuda Walking Tours, said: "Our GPS guided tours focus on the experiences of Bermuda's people, places, and events that played a vital role in defining ourselves, our culture, and our history in fun and entertaining ways.

"Visitors now have the opportunity to step back into history where they'll discover many things that span four centuries of time, from the British flagship Sea Venture which crashed on our shores on her way from England to Virginia to Mark Twain, the famous American author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, who was one of our island's first and most dedicated tourists.

"I'm thrilled to be able to offer visitors to Bermuda engaging, educational, high-quality tourism entertainment that connects visitors to our historic sites, galleries, museums and local artisans."
