Canopius Group Ltd., one of the biggest privately-owned Lloyd's insurance underwriting businesses, has appointed Stephen Hartwig as senior vice-president and head of excess casualty to its Bermuda-based underwriting agency, Canopius Underwriting Bermuda Ltd. (CUBL).

Mr. Hartwig joins CUBL from Ace Bermuda Insurance Ltd., where he was vice-president and team leader of the excess liability division. In this role he was responsible for both the management and development of the division's diverse portfolio and the implementation of new products and initiatives.

In a career spanning nearly two decades in the industry, Mr. Hartwig also worked at Starr Excess in Bermuda, GE Frankona, both in Germany and Denmark, and The Travelers Insurance Companies. Heading up CUBL's excess casualty unit, he will develop the division's portfolio and client base in line with the group's growth strategy for Syndicate 4444.
