Diners will be able to enjoy a taste of the East End when one of Bermuda's most exotically located restaurants opens its doors tomorrow.

Lighthouse Grill, which will be run by business partners, directors and sisters-in-law Morney Piper and Danielle Trott, is based at the foot of St. David's Lighthouse and offers panoramic views across the Island, with an impressive menu to match.

There will be a grand opening to mark the launch of the restaurant tomorrow evening, with guests being treated to an array of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

"We hope to bring a little flavour to the East side," said Ms Piper.

"Ever since I was 10, I have been doing my father's (Myron Piper) books and filing and working in his office.

"And he is there 100 percent for us to advise us and see us through, having worked in the hotel and restaurant trade for years.

"Our aim is to bring people down this end of the Island because it is so close to everything from the beaches to St. George's and, of course, St. David's Lighthouse."

The building located in Mount Road, which was formerly the Mount Area Nightclub, was taken over by the Piper family four years ago and reconverted into a restaurant and house. The redecoration work has included a new lick of paint and the addition of a water feature, artwork and bamboo plants to give it a chic feel throughout the bar and two dining areas with a capacity to seat 50, while there is also a flatscreen television for live sporting events.

It has proved to be a real family affair, with Ms Piper and Ms Trott being assisted by a team of two chefs, two waiters and four bar staff, while the former's brother, Marco Piper, who runs MA Piper Ltd., a contracting and development company, has been busy on the building side adding the finishing touches to the restaurant.

Ms Trott also has good experience of running a business, with her own decorating company and working as event co-ordinator for the Corporation of Hamilton.

Ms Piper reckons the atmosphere of the restaurant will really set it apart from anywhere else and will prove to be a key selling point.

"You would not find this type of atmosphere anywhere else down this end of the Island," she said.

"Also, the location is great and we offer a continental menu which caters for all tastes, as well as a great set of personalities and customer service. We offer something for everyone from the tourists to the locals."

The lunch menu offers everything from appetisers, including fish cakes, crispy calamari, lump crab cakes, shrimp cocktail, escargots, grilled teriyaki skewer sticks and chicken wings, to soups, such as fish chowder and soup of the day, and even salads and sandwich platters, like grilled chicken sandwiches, burgers, fishcakes on a bun and fish and chips, and a variety of pasta and side dishes. There is also a kids menu and a desserts listing consisting of ice cream, creme brule, cheese cake, apple crumble and chocolate cake for those with a sweet tooth.

Dinner comprises numerous offerings from fish fillets, grilled teriyaki chicken and sauteed garlic butter shrimp over linguini to curry chicken and surf 'n' turf, with a wine list featuring a selection of white, red and house vintages, port and champagne.

Those who prefer to enjoy eating in the comfort of their own front room can take advantage of the take away service which delivers to St. David's and St. George's.

Plans are afoot to turn the 360-degree view balcony into a venue for weddings and private parties, complete with a bar, barbecue area and gazebo, set to open on May 24, while the patio below is expected to be finished in the next month. The memory of the former nightclub will also live on, with plans to take the mirrors off the mirror ball and make it into a garden sculpture.

The restaurant is open for lunch between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Thursdays to Tuesdays and dinner from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the bar open until 1 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It will be closed on Wednesdays.
