Masked raiders fire shots at Butterfield Bank Cayman branch
Three shots were reportedly fired during an armed robbery of a branch of Butterfield Bank in the Cayman Islands yesterday.
The incident took place at the Compass Banking Centre on North Sound Road this morning.
A spokesman at Butterfield's Bermuda headquarters yesterday said no-one had been hurt in the incident.
Unconfirmed reports, published yesterday on the Cayman News Service website, said there were two masked robbers.
Cayman Police told CNS that they received a report of the robbery around 11.20am
A source connected to the bank told the News27 television channel there were two gunmen. Shots were fired but no one was injured. However, a pregnant woman at the bank was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, which News27 believed was a precautionary measure.
A Butterfield Bank spokesman said yesterday: "We confirm that there was an incident at the Butterfield Banking Centre at the Compass Centre on North Sound Road, Grand Cayman this morning at approximately 11.30am local time.
"No customers or employees of the Bank were injured and the Banking Centre is secure.
"As a result of this morning's incident, the Compass Banking Centre is closed this afternoon. All other Butterfield Banking Centres are open for business as usual.
"An investigation by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is underway and, as such, we will refrain from providing additional comments at this time."
