Traditional Bermudian food to be featured at restaurant

Bermudian fare: North Shore Grill And Catering owner Tracey Belboda outside her restaurant

Traditional Bermudian food looks set to make a big comeback if one of the latest restaurants to open on the Island is anything to go by.

North Shore Grill and Catering, which was launched by owner Tracey Belboda on March 1, has already proved to be a big hit with locals who go there to sample the home cooked dishes on offer.

The eatery, which is based in the Slipway Nightclub building next to the Clayhouse Inn on North Shore Road in Devonshire, offers everything from home made hamburgers, baked and fried whole chicken legs and bean pies to fish sandwiches and dinners, as well as fresh vegetables.

Ms Belboda said she decided to start her own restaurant after seeing a niche in the market on that part of the Island for traditional Bermudian fare and considering her family's background in the trade with her husband Glenn running the New World Takeout at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club and her father operating his own restaurant.

"When this opportunity became available I decided I wanted to do something for myself, so I grabbed it," she said.

"The location was ideal because along this stretch of road you really don't have anywhere offering local home cooked food.

"So far, business has been pretty good and I am even starting to get customers from the West End dropping in."

Ms Belboda, who is relishing the role of being her own boss, has set about putting her new enterprise on the map mainly by word of mouth, advertising on the radio and sending out mail shoots.

She said the restaurant prides itself on its "soul food" with "a lot of love" going into the cooking, with dishes such as fish cakes, shrimp, mac and cheese, Spanish rice and peas and rice, in addition to offering soft serve ice cream, smoothies and barbecued ribs and burgers in the summer. The traditional codfish and potato breakfast with all the trimmings is also available.

There are also plans to expand the menu to include oriental foods like fried rice, egg rolls and sushi and Ms Belboda, who currently runs the business with some help from her family, is also looking to bring in some new chefs in the future and plans to set up a new website.

North Shore Grill and Catering is open Mondays to Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as catering. There is also parking available on site.
