Chelsea wins four-year scholarship from XL
Bermudian economics student Chelsea Mayeaux has won a four-year scholarship from the XL Foundation.
Chelsea, the daugther of Daren and Cindy Mayeaux of Paget, was selected from a field of 25 applicants for the scholarship, which is open to Bermudians working towards a degree in insurance-related studies.
XL's Director of Human Resources in Bermuda, Leah Dean, said: "We were very impressed by Chelsea's academic and extra-curricular achievements, as well as her leadership. She has shown a dedication to her studies, and a genuine interest in the insurance/reinsurance industry. In addition, she is a talented musician and actor, and has demonstrated a commitment through her volunteer activity to the communities in which she lives, here and overseas."
Chelsea attended Bermuda High School and St. John's University, New York and will be furthering her studies at City University in London in September, majoring in Financial economics. An avid musician and actor, Chelsea has played leading roles in various musicals. She was featured in the 2008 and 2009 Heritage Concerts as a soloist and featured artist and has sung with the St. John's Youth Choir.
Chelsea has most recently dedicated her time as a volunteer in New York where she has worked with Handcrafting Justice, a fair trade charity working with women struggling for economic justice and independence in developing countries.
Upon completion of her studies, Chelsea plans to return to Bermuda to pursue a career in underwriting and actuarial science. Since the inception of the XL Scholarship (formerly the XL Insurance Scholarship) in 1990, approximately $2 million has been provided to help Bermudians prepare for professional careers in the insurance industry. A condition of the award is that recipients be willing to return to Bermuda on completion of their studies.
XL Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Bermuda insurer XL Capital Ltd.
