Dunne wins RenRe scholarship

Bermuda High School graduate Emily Dunne was selected from 110 applicants to win the RenaissanceRe Scholarship.

Ms Dunne will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Fall to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

"Our intention with the scholarship award is to foster in young Bermudians ideals that we value as an organisation, and to support and encourage the continued pursuit of these ideals throughout their higher education careers," RenRe chief executive officer Neill Currie said.

"Our hope is that these outstanding students will contribute very positively both to the workforce and the community upon their return to Bermuda. Emily's achievements reflect her focus and her passion and I wish her every success at MIT."

The RenaissanceRe Scholarship covers tuition at an accredited institution for a period of up to four years. The recipient of the Scholarship is not required to work for RenaissanceRe upon completion of studies.

The successful candidate is determined by a committee drawn from the approximately 100 Bermudian employees at RenaissanceRe from all business and functional areas. The selected candidate must demonstrate academic and personal excellence, leadership qualities and a commitment to community service.

Ms Dunne received an International Baccalaureate Diploma with an outstanding score. During her years at the Bermuda High School, she received numerous academic awards.

She placed first in the 2009 Math Olympiad and was nominated for the Bermuda Outstanding Teen Award in Academic Excellence.

She participated on numerous interschool teams, playing in the basketball interschool finals and helping to win a gold medal in for her softball team.

She has run races ranging from 5Ks to half-marathons and was named the 2009 Under-20 Female Club Runner of the Year by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club.

Ms Dunne also plays women's touch rugby and played on the starting line-up for the Mariners women's touch rugby team.

She has volunteered on a weekly basis for the past four years at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and was a YouthNet Peer Mentor for two years. She has also gained work experience over a number of years in the hospitality industry.
