Island on cusp of OECD 'white list'

Bermuda's tax information exchange agreement (TIEA) tally has been updated to 11 by the OECD - one short of qualifying for promotion from the "grey list" of tax havens.

The list was last updated on April 2, the day that G20 leaders met in London and promised to clamp down on tax havens.

By that day, Bermuda had three TIEAs signed, but negotiations concluded on another eight.

Those eight - with the Nordic Group of seven countries and New Zeland - were inked on April 16.

"Further, the Ministry of Finance TIEA team has concluded negotiations with Germany, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mexico and Canada," Finance Minister Paula Cox said on Friday, adding that she was very pleased to see the May 7 updated list.

"Arrangements are being made to sign these agreements in the near future. Discussions are on-going with Japan, and the Ministry has accepted an invitation from France to enter into discussions leading to agreement of a TIEA.

"As a result, the Ministry of Finance is closing rapidly on its goal to have agreements in place with all of the G7 countries as well as other significant trading partners within OECD."
