Former Wind River Reinsurance Company Ltd., Bermuda chief executive officer David Whiting has joined Bermuda rival Torus Re.

Mr. Whiting has been appointed senior casualty reinsurance underwriter of the reinsurance arm of global specialty insurer Torus with immediate effect. In this role Mr. Whiting is responsible for all of Torus Re's casualty underwriting and reports directly to Tim Mardon, Torus Re's president and chief underwriting officer. He is based in Torus' Bermuda office.

Prior to Torus, Mr. Whiting was most recently president and CEO of Wind River Re, Bermuda, where he was responsible for all non-US operations of the group. Mr. Whiting has also held senior positions at Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance Group, the Hartford Insurance Group, Tillinghast, Quanta and the Centre Reinsurance Companies.

A mathematics graduate from the University of Waterloo and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), David is also a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, the Society of Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS).

Commenting on this strategic appointment, Mr. Mardon said: "David is a seasoned veteran with a track record of developing a profitable casualty portfolio across market cycles.

"We recognise the current competitive trends in the casualty market, but as the market improves, as we expect it to, we will be in a position to respond. To this end the unit will be making several further key appointments in the near future."
