Ex-money launderer presents at compliance seminar

Ken Rijock

Former money launderer turned compliance consultant Ken Rijock will present three sessions at a one-day seminar presented by the Association of Bermuda Compliance Officers (ABCO) on Thursday.Mr Rijock is a rare example of a someone with personal experience of laundering money who now consults with law enforcement and the financial community. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the field of money laundering, as a practising laundryman, financial institution compliance consultant, and trainer/lecturer to law enforcement and the intelligence services of both the US and Canada. The theme of Thursday’s event is “Emerging Threats” and it will examine the challenges compliance officers face in meeting the demands of increasing breadth and depth of regulation, which governments have imposed in response to the financial crisis and a string of major frauds. The seminar, which will be held at HSBC’s Harbourview building on Front Street from 9.30am to 3.30pm, will comprise three session presented by Mr Rijock. The first is “Tradecraft”, which explains the advanced and esoteric money laundering technique and the methods of detecting them on a real-time basis. Then, “Emerging Threats” will cover the issues that have evolved in 2011, and which may appear in 2012, followed by “Life Experiences”, which promises to be interesting, given Mr Rijock’s background.ABCO president Cheryl Mapp said: “We are delighted to have arranged for Mr Rijock, a consummate expert, to present again to a Bermuda audience. He has spoken at our conferences in the past so is no newcomer to Bermuda.“He will be remembered for his uncanny ability to present and explain the concepts of compliance with wit and humour.”The cost of all three sessions is $175 and $125 for ABCO members, with refreshments and a light lunch included.
