FedEx just hit its busiest day ever, and the Bermuda team had its fair share of delivering packages destined for underneath Christmas trees Island-wide.The company’s 34 employees, who are all Bermudian, have been putting in extra shifts to cope with their busiest season of the year. And they will be working flat out Christmas Eve to help Santa and his elves get everyone’s presents delivered. In addition, to help speed up deliveries, FedEx Bermuda has customs clearance on site at its World Service Centre at Mills Creek.“Over the holidays we see a spike in the amount of packages that come through FedEx Bermuda,” said Chris Heslop, senior manager of stations operations at FedEx Bermuda.“This year we have experienced a 15-20 percent increase in volume when compared to previous months. Unfortunately, we cannot share exact numbers due to company policy.”FedEx Bermuda has 11 vans, four bikes and three heavy trucks.“We are proud of our World Service Centre that opened in April 2010,” Mr Heslop added.“This is a one-of-a-kind project in the FedEx Caribbean District. We are the only company that has customs located on-site in our facility to improve the clearance process and to be able to offer the fastest clearance speed in the market.”There is parking for more than 40 vehicles at the centre, as well as a large customer service area.Mr Heslop noted that globally, company forecasters expected FedEx would move approximately 17 million shipments almost double its daily average volume through its global networks on Monday this week.Mr Heslop said December 12 was projected to be FedEx Global’s busiest day in its nearly 40-year history. To ensure the thousands of packages that come through Bermuda arrive at their final destinations on time, Mr Heslop said: “We are offering additional shifts to our team members. There is an extraordinary commitment from the team in making sure all packages get delivered in time for Christmas.“Our people play a vital role during this time of the year, and without their efforts, commitment and flexibility, we would not be able to accomplish our goal.”He added: “There is also an extraordinary amount of technology and precision that is in place at FedEx to ensure packages get to their destinations before Christmas.”Rather than seeing couriers as competitors, FedEx believes retailers and other companies should see them as partners who can help them grow their business, by providing shipping service plans to the Island.FedEx Bermuda also offers a frequent shipper discount programme to local businesses. The company’s business sales account executive is Camilla Macpherson.“We have a great promotion called The FedEx Purple Card Discount Program is a frequent shipper program that allows customers to save on frequent shipping,” Mr. Heslop said.Upon registration, customers receive a five percent discount. Savings progress from there with a 10 percent discount the second time, a 25 percent discount the third time, a 50 percent discount the fourth time and free shipment the fifth time.Free shipment is only valid for shipments from one pound to about 22 pounds. The promotion is valid until next May 31.“In the new global economy, (small and medium businesses) have the potential to play an even larger role in propelling economic development in their communities,” Mr. Heslop said. “FedEx promotes trade and is a facilitator of transportation services to companies of all sizes from large to (small and medium) and retail businesses.”
