Mayor: Much to be done before work can start on new hotel

Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling: Transformer needs to be moved

Neither the Tourism Minister nor the Corporation of Hamilton will release details of the timeline for the proposed St Regis hotel and residences to be built on the Par-la-Ville car park. But Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling did say a Belco transformer and lines that provide power to the city must be relocated before construction can begin, and he expected work on that to start about a year from now.The Royal Gazette asked Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert and the Corporation when ground breaking was expected and when the project they announced to the public last week was slated for completion.Mr Furbert would only say: “I can confirm that a commitment letter for financing is in place. All parties, COH, developers, financiers have some timeliness to meet. Within that time line, due diligence will be carried out.”Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling provided a few more details.“Breaking ground will not take place immediately as there are a number of things that need to be done and put into place before that happens,” Mr Gosling said.“A Belco transformer, which provides power to a significant portion of the City needs to be moved, together with the power lines leading to and away from the vault.“There is also the closure of the car park. Today’s economy has impacted parking to the extent that Bulls Head and City Hall car parks have enough vacant spaces to make up for this closure. As the economy is seen to improve, the City will look for and implement new parking opportunities.“Some work can be done around the vault and in parallel, I would expect some associated activity in 12-18 months whether it be new transformer vaults, road work trenching or even excavation work.”The Mayor added: “All parties are aware of the timelines in place and the Minister is adamant in his commitment to those timelines. The City will work to ensure the components we have control over and have responsibility for are in line with the terms of the agreement.”Mr Gosling and the US developer Ted Adams III of Unified Resorts announced the signing of fresh agreements and a ground lease for the proposed Par-la-Ville resort last week.Mr Gosling said as a result the city’s writ that was filed against Unified over failure to meet certain obligations will be pulled and become “null and void”.Plans for a hotel at the Par-la-Ville were first announced in 2007 with Ritz Carlton attached as operator. Starwood was named as a new partner in 2009, when it was stated the hotel would open in 2013.Going by that timeline, if and once financing is actually given to the developer, it would be at least 2016 before the proposed 140-room, 80-residence St Regis resort would be completed.
