Inflation up to 2.9% in May

The cost for frozen vegetables are up 11.1 percent year over year

Inflation rose in May from the previous month, and consumers are now paying 2.9 percent more for goods over last year.Between April and May, the average cost of goods and services went up .2 percent. And, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by Government yesterday, a basket of goods that cost $100 in April of 2006 not costs $119.70.The report indicates the food sector had the strongest impact on the year over year increase with a 4.5 percent rise in prices. Items such as frozen vegetables (up 11.1 percent), cooking oils and condiments (up 9.7 percent) and fresh fruits (up 9.3 percent) factored heavily in the increase.“The health and personal care and fuel and power sectors also contributed to the rise in the annual rate of inflation as price shifts in these sectors were 5.9 percent and 13.4 percent respectively,” the report stated.Prices in the transport and vehicles sector rose 1.1 percent in May, in increase largely attributed to a nine percent hike in the average price of airfares.The clothing and footwear sector increased (.2 percent) with a four percent increase in the cost of dry cleaning being the biggest contributing factor.In contrast, tobacco and liquor prices were down .1 percent during the month as was the cost of rent, which was down .1 percent.
