Bermuda named ‘Best Digital Jurisdiction’ by UK magazine
Bermuda has been awarded the “Best Digital Jurisdiction Award” for 2012 by the UK’s World Commerce Review magazine, Economic Development Minister, Grant Gibbons has announcedA statement from Dr Gibbons yesterday said that the World Commerce Review awards are “recognised as the principal indicators of professional conduct and excellence”.“I would like to congratulate Bermuda’s ICT sector who have been instrumental in Bermuda receiving this award,” Dr Gibbons said. “The Ministry of Economic Development will continue to support the advancement of ICT and the digital economy to maintain the excellence for which Bermuda has been recognised.”In naming Bermuda the Best Digital Jurisdiction, the selection panel took into account product innovation, ongoing customer support and best practice criteria as well as a continuing commitment to deploying the best technology and practice to enhance productivity.Other factors considered included government policy, strategy and practices. In addition, forward planning and corporate social responsibility were seen as key areas for the award committee.Bermuda has been known as the ‘Wired Island’ for well over a decade. Statistics from 2010 show Bermuda had the largest number of cell phones per capita in the world and internet penetration rates of 89 percent. In the last four Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) digital economy studies, Bermuda has consistently been ranked in the top 22 countries in the world for e-readiness.
