Bermuda is the inspiration for vineyard vines’ — the American prep clothier — summer 2014 collection.

With stores from Newport Beach to Nantucket, vineyard vines — best known for their whimsical neckties and smiling pink whale logo, along with a lively, preppy style of clothing for men, women and children — are found in more than 600 speciality and department stores throughout the world.

Promoting the collection is a thick, 50-plus page seasonal catalogue, photographed in Bermuda and featuring Bermudians and Bermuda residents, who are also quoted about life on this mid-Atlantic island.

Within the catalogue the individual pieces have names like names like ‘Harrington tucker shirt’, and ‘South Shore harbour shirt’. Shep Murray, vineyard vines chief executive officer and co-founder said: “We were inspired to shoot in Bermuda after I travelled there with my family, and vineyard vines has always had an extremely successful partnership with the Newport to Bermuda Race.

“It’s a destination Ian [his brother, fellow CEO and founder] and I have both always loved.”

A vineyard vines spokesperson said the summer collection was inspired by their “long-standing relationships on Bermuda with AS Cooper, the Newport to Bermuda Race, Gosling’s, The Reefs and Shep’s trip with his family.

“Shep and Ian wanted design a collection based on Bermuda and shoot a catalogue there for almost two years, and we’re so excited to see all that come to fruition now.” ?

And in the catalogue the founders are quoted as saying they had travelled to Bermuda as children and for their honeymoons. “Bermuda is truly an inspiration with its bright blue water, beautiful pink sand beaches, rich history and tradition, and top-tier offshore fishing.”

Ian Murray said: “We’re thrilled with the shots we got while in Bermuda and the locals we had the pleasure of profiling for our catalogue, including Malcolm Gosling of Gosling’s Rum and The Reefs’ David Dodwell.”

His brother Shep added: “We see Bermuda as a signature vineyard vines destination — the beautiful beaches, sailing, colourful scenery and local hospitality are all things that span across both our brand and the Island. We will continue to sponsor the Newport Bermuda Race and are excited about some other Bermuda-based partnerships we have in the works.”

Bermudian Somers Cooper, owner of retailer AS Cooper & Sons Ltd which carries the brand, is featured in a full page photograph at the helm of a yacht under sail in Hamilton Harbour. Bermuda residents the Bigley family are also featured, wearing vineyard vines clothing while walking on the beach. They are quoted about their weekend activities: “ ... always busy and include ballet, Tumble Tots, a trip to the farm near our house for fresh produce, a locally organised children’s biking event, trips to the beach, boating and/or relaxing in our backyear grilling with our friends (we have a fabulous view that never gets old).”

Assisting in bringing vineyard vines, which was founded in 1998 on Martha’s Vineyard, to Bermuda were former Bermuda residents Kira Jennings, who helped to line up the families featured in the catalogue, along with her husband Mark. The vineyard vines spokesperson said: “They were incredibly helpful to us in making introductions as we planned our catalogue shoot; they are truly wonderful friends of the brand.”

Mr Jennings said: “I was very pleased with how it turned out — I don’t believe there was anything that wasn’t in (the catalogue) that I would have liked to have seen in there.

“If anything, I would have loved for them to have seen more of the beautiful places Bermuda has to offer, but the catalogue was only so long and they could only take so many pictures. Maybe next year!”
