Valuable bandwidth cleared for new use
A block of ultra-high frequency bandwidth in Bermuda has been freed up, paving the way for it to be used by mobile service providers to improve the delivery of mobile services.
World on Wireless (WOW), the wireless subscription television provider, held the licence for TV broadcasts in the UHF 38-69 range. It was asked by the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda (RAB) to relinquish the frequencies and migrate its services to UHF 21-50, a lower level on the ultra-high frequency spectrum. By doing so, it would free radio wavelengths in the 700MHz group that have been increasingly in demand by mobile service companies.
WOW agreed to the request and has completed the migration of its services, which concludes the first phase of the RAB’s move optimise the assignment of spectrum for data and voice transmission in Bermuda.
The authority is currently carrying out the final round of public consultation regarding the assignment and licensing of high demand spectrum.
Kyle Masters, interim chief executive for the RAB, said: “The clearing of this valuable 700MHz block of spectrum ahead of the authority’s high-demand spectrum assignment process (HDS-1) is a key component of the authority’s plan to make it possible for mobile providers to improve the delivery of mobile service to the Bermuda public.”
