A total of 98 per cent of Bermuda businesses have secure servers, according to a Government survey.

And 90 per cent of businesses also have a disaster recovery or business continuity plan.

The survey also showed that 79 per cent of businesses host their data locally, edging out cloud computing on 70 per cent.

Computers are owned by 97 per cent of companies in the survey, while 81 per cent use laptops, with access to the internet logged at 100 per cent.

Grant Gibbons, the Minister of Economic Development, said: “Bermuda’s success and her ability to remain competitive are greatly assisted by the strength of her digital infrastructure.”

On the home front, nearly 90 per cent of households have a computer network, 88 per cent of which are wireless and a further 88 per cent are rated as secure.

And 92 per cent of residences have access to the internet, while 91 per cent have laptops.

The statistics are contained in the State of ICT in Bermuda 2016 report.

Dr Gibbons said: “The results of the report confirm that Bermuda residents and Bermudian-based companies continue to be well-connected, acquire technology in ever-increasing numbers and use it effectively in most areas of everyday life.

“Indeed it confirms that technology is a fundamental part of our lives.

“Its use drives and facilitates much of what Bermuda residents and Bermudian-based organisations do on a daily basis at school, at work and at home.”

Marisa Stones, director of ICT policy and innovation, added that research is regularly carried out to establish the reach of technology across the domestic and business worlds.

Dr Stones said: “Individuals and organisations use it and we benchmark the data in order to inform Government policies and initiatives.”

The information is also used to back Bermuda’s marketing efforts to attract foreign investment, on the basis these investment decisions are based on the complete package a jurisdiction has to offer.

The Ministry said that Bermuda is an “e-ready” domicile, which gives it a competitive edge.
