Bermudian financial technology start-up Trunomi scooped a major international prize by winning the Global Fintech Hackcelerator competition in Singapore.

The company, which has developed a data rights management platform, was one of the three winners to each receive a $50,000 prize at the event after pitching on stage to a panel of judges at the Singapore Fintech Festival.

It was the culmination of a 12-week “hackcelerator”, run by KPMG and the Monetary Authority of Singapore involving 20 finalists shortlisted from 580 submissions from 40 countries.

Trunomi also won $25,000 worth of credits with Baker McKenzie, a global law firm that specialises in fintech business and has offices in 47 countries.

And on the same day two of the Trunomi team were also named on the Innovate Finance Top 100 Women in Fintech Powerlist. Sally-Anne Baron, chief financial officer, and Chia Brewin, director of customer development, a Bermudian, were honoured.

On Thursday’s “Demo Day”, Ms Brewin, together with Stuart Lacey, Trunomi’s founder and chief executive officer, made the team’s five-minute pitch and then answered questions from judges on a huge stage at the festival, the largest fintech event in the world.

Speaking from Singapore, Mr Lacey said he was delighted for his team.

“This is the biggest fintech event in the world with over 25,000 attendees from the entire Asia Pacific region — and Trunomi just won — it’s incredible.”

“This truly establishes Bermudian-born Trunomi in the eyes of the world. We are coming home with about $100,000 in cash and prizes.

“The judging panel was comprised of some of the biggest names in corporate, investment and regulation. And for Trunomi, this is more about the recognition of our brand in the region and the acceptance of our solutions from key industry players.”

He added that it was a great validation for the Trunomi team.

“It would not have possible without the help of two of our team members — Chia Brewin and Alexa Mackenzie, who are both Bermudians and who were with me in Singapore,” Mr Lacey said. 

“It’s a major gateway for us to opportunities within the Asian market. It’s a recognition that our data rights platform has come of age and is a necessary part of the modernisation of the global financial services industry — and that the opportunities around it are bigger than anyone ever thought.”

The other winners in Singapore were Moxtra, an embeddable secure messaging service, and Sqreem, a platform that delivers asymmetric information in real-time on different markets.

Trunomi is based in New Venture house on Mill Creek Road and also has offices in California’s Silicon Valley and London.
