The landmark Hamilton Princess Hotel has hired seven new staff at the end of a special training programme.

Tim Morrison, general manager of the hotel, said the room attendant training scheme was set up with the Bermuda Hospitality Institute and the Government.

He added: “Guest room attendants play an integral part in our guests’ experience and we are proud to welcome our seven new colleagues to our team.”

Five of the new hires will work as room attendants and the other two as house persons.

The programme involved a two-week mix of practical work and a written exam, with successful candidates being awarded a guest room attendant certificate.

The course taught the fundamentals of housekeeping work and guest relations and was designed to provide the skills needed to keep rooms “clean, safe and well-maintained at any Bermuda lodging”.

An extra week of work experience was also offered to course members.

Malika Cartwright, executive director of the BHI, said: “We’re delighted with the progress of the programme, which has taught and inspired a new wave of guest room attendants, who are a vital part of Bermuda tourism.

“They are expected to greet guests warmly and provide a first-class experience.

“We are grateful for the support of the Bermuda Government and Hamilton Princess and Beach Club who have made the course possible.”

Diallo Rabain, the education and workforce development minister, added: “Government is committed to diversifying training and getting work programmes up and running to ensure that Bermudians are adequately prepared to be qualified candidates for employment in all sectors of the island’s workforce.

“We are very pleased with the success of this programme which is a fantastic career pathway to become accredited.”
