First IoD conference: Rochelle Simons, chairwoman of the IoD Bermuda branch

The Institute of Directors (IoD) Bermuda in partnership with Informa have confirmed a full line of business leaders set to speak on a range of topical issues at its inaugural Governance Conference, which will take place on November 2 at Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Beach Club.

The event will feature international and local speakers delivering thought leadership on a range of topical issues surrounding corporate governance.

John Rankin, the Governor, will formally open the event, which will feature informative speeches and panel discussions designed for senior management, directors, aspiring directors and legal counsel to gain insight into current governance trends.

Topics to be covered will include:

• Corporate governance trends for 2019 and beyond

• Leading cultural change

• Risk oversight and entrepreneurial mindset

• Crisis management

• The impact of global regulations

• Becoming a tech savvy board

• Sustainability and corporate social responsibility

International speakers include Roger Barker, head of corporate governance, IoD, who will cover governance trends for the future.

Dr Barker is a well-respected governance professional, with insights into key governance organisations in the UK and Europe.

Other international speakers include D’Anne Hurd, board member, Eileen Fisher; Michael Montelongo, director, Herbalife; Andrew Chrostowski, board member, Rogers Group and Martin Wilderer, director, Rise Beyond.

Sara Schroter Ross, conference chairwoman, said: “We feel that this event is very timely given recent developments in legislation and regulation in Bermuda and internationally, which we see resulting in increased scrutiny being placed on company directors to have a better grasp than ever before of proactive risk management, legal, tax and reporting developments, changing technological trends and HR related matters to name just a few.”

Rochelle Simons, chairwoman, IoD Bermuda, said: “We are excited to host the first event of its kind in Bermuda. Its purpose is to promote business excellence in board governance by inviting international and local speakers to inspire our business leaders in Bermuda.

“The conference is open to both IoD members and non-members. We also invite aspiring board leaders to come out and learn more about what being a board member consists of.”

The one-day conference will also provide attendees with an opportunity to network and a lunch and drinks reception will be provided.
