A new take on the Old Town
The Town of St. George is not only a World Heritage Site but also one of Bermuda?s most enduring gems.
Rich in history, architecturally beautiful and imbued with an old-world charm, the former capital is a visitor?s dream ? whether that visitor be a local resident or someone from overseas.
For all who visit St. George?s, the experience is pleasantly different. Unhurried and unfussed, there is a sense of entering a time capsule where the madness of today?s world has been kept a bay.
Here rampant, tasteless development, architecture alien to the ?typically Bermudian? style and scale for which we were once renowned, traffic clogged streets, pollution and most of the other ills of 21st century Bermuda have not encroached upon its uniqueness.
Many who walk the narrow lanes and explore the historic buildings take with them fond memories of the place, but few tangible reminders of what they have seen and learned. Until now, that is.
The St. George?s Foundation has produced an excellent DVD entitled ?A Stroll Through St. George?s? which provides a quick-moving, informative overview of the town?s history, particularly as it relates to North America.
Bermudian narrator Lance Furbert, nattily dressed in yellow slacks, blue shirt and snappy bow tie, identifies and provides a thumbnail history of each place featured, including Dunford House, the Hunter Building, St. George?s Post Office, the Globe Hotel, the two bank buildings on Town Square, ?Banana Manor?, the Old Rectory, Stuart Hall, Shinbone and Blockade Alleys, and Somers Garden.
The DVD ?tour? lasts 15 minutes, and as always Bermudian Lucinda Spurling?s photography is very professional. In fact, the amount of educational information packed into 15 minutes is a happy surprise.
Foundation chairman Henry Hayward is justifiably upbeat about the new DVD, describing it as ?a must for every home in Bermuda and a great gift?.
?Lucinda Spurling?s production and Lance Furbert?s narration are to be commended,? he says. ?One can now sit in the comfort of one?s own home and be educated as to the importance of St. George as a World Heritage Town.?
The Foundation plans to distribute complimentary copies to the Island?s schools. Meanwhile, it is taking orders for the DVD. For price details and further information telephone 297-3767 or e-mail directorsgflogic.bm
Funds raised from sales of the DVD will be used to support the operations of the St. George?s Foundation as it continues to implement the St. George?s Town Heritage Plan, ?Bringing History to Life?.
