Bermudian cast sought for ?Tony and Tina?s Wedding?

Wedding in Nutty Matrimony: Actors from the New York production of Tony and Tina's Wedding an interactive play that has been off Broadway for 18 years.

It would be a typical Bermudian wedding complete with dinner, wedding cake and two kooky families, if not for the fact that the bridal party has to audition to participate.

Bermudians are being asked to audition for a local performance of the popular off Broadway New York interactive comedy, ?Tony and Tina?s Wedding? to open in May.

?It has been playing in New York for 18 years,? said play director Larry Pellegrini.

?Tony and Tina?s Wedding has also been performed all around the world including Vancouver, Canada, Maui and Sydney Australia. In each location the play is adjusted to reflect the local culture.?

In Bermuda the play will focus on the wedding of an interracial couple.

?It is about two families who get together for a wedding,? said Mr. Pellegrini. The audience are actually part of that wedding. The actors come and talk with you and dance with you.?

During the play, the audience has dinner and even wedding cake.

Mr. Pellegrini was asked to bring the play to Bermuda by the Ministry of Tourism.

?The Ministry thought it would be a good way to give tourists a slice of Bermuda life,? said Mr. Pellegrini.

Mr. Pellegrini and operations manager Jody Rosenthal are hoping to make the entire cast ? more than 20 characters ? Bermudian.

?The play looks like madness but it is very choreographed,? said Mr. Pellegrini. ?It wouldn?t be safe for the audience if it wasn?t.

?There is a published script that takes you through the different themes of the play that happen the same way every night. The music is the same way every night. The thing that is different every night is the audience participation.

?The actors have set pieces, but if you come to the play and they talk to you the play will change based on your dialogue. There is a spontaneity within the structure, but it is very structured.?

Mr. Rosenthal joked that the audience had rehearsed by going to weddings their entire life.

?We are trying to generate a fantastic local cast,? said Mr. Pellegrini. ?We are looking for people who can improvise well and hold a conversation. Tina is a tough chick. Tony has to be 20 to 30 years old. There is a wedding singer, and various other characters.?

Auditions will be on at the Hamilton Princess tomorrow in the Gazebo Room from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The play will be performed in May.
