Biff Kids Film Festival top films honoured
The Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) and Butterfield Bank has announced that two short films, and a feature film, earned Best Film honours at the second annual BIFF Kids Film Festival, October 14-16.
St. Mathurin's School of Practical Joking, by director Chris Waitt of the United Kingdom, earned top honours from judges Mary Glass, Caroline Skinner and Alexander McCallum in the Ages 5 and Up category.
The ten-minute comedy tells the story of a school where pupils attend classes in the art of peashooting, learn about the chemistry of the stink bomb and conduct experiments on the correct use of the whoopee cushion.
Judges Pierre Basden, Signe Constable and Clare Gonzalez gave the German feature film, The Tenth Summer, the top film nod in the Ages 10 and Up category.
The charming feature tells the story of young children on a worker's housing estate in the Lower Rhine district who hatch a plan to start their own zoo. Jorg Grunler directs the film.
Foighiddin (The Crimson Snowdrop) earned top honours from judges Christopher Frith, Jordan Hames, Cynthia Bean and Nicholas Rinehimer in the Ages 13 and Up category.
The 15-minute fantasy film, by director Simon Miller of the United Kingdom, tells the story of the most patient man in the world and the journeys and struggles he endures to save his true love.
BIFF management committee members, former film professor Vicky Zabriskie and children's librarian Christian Zabriskie, chaperoned the jury. All of the films were judged on a four-point scale in eight categories, with those scores being tallied to determine the winners.
The second annual BIFF Kids Film Festival, presented by BIFF in partnership with Butterfield Bank, screened 24 films from 15 countries ? plus 22 short films made by local students in film production workshops conducted by BIFF this summer.
