'Blink' wins an Emmy

A documentary with strong Bermuda ties was honoured with an Emmy award Wednesday night in New York.

Bermudian Spencer Critchley acted as co-composer and audio producer on the award winning film - "Blink" - which was also screened locally during last April's film festival.

The film tells the story of Gregory Withrow, a former white supremacist who fell in love with a Latino woman and moved away from the violent White Aryan Resistance movement.

While it missed out on a BIFF award - losing to the odd true tale of corn, "Hybrid" - "Blink" captured the "Outstanding Coverage of a Continuing News Story" category in Wednesday night's gala ceremony.

The film was broadcast on PBS in the United States last July as part of that channel's critically acclaimed P.O.V. series.

Blink beat out the "AIDS in Africa" episode of ABC's Nightline and a segment entitled "What's Up with the Weather" which aired on Nova/Frontline to win the Emmy.

The film was produced by Elizabeth Thompson.

Mr. Critchley - son of the Island's former Health and Social Services Permanent Secretary David Critchley - had creative responsibility for its music, sound effects and dialogue.

Mr. Critchley, 42, now lives in Palo Alto, California where he works as a creative consultant.

Another pair of BIFF veterans were also honoured at the same ceremony.

Directors Lisa Gossels and Dean Weatherall took home an Emmy award for their film "Children of Charbonne".

The film won the "Outstanding Historical Programme with Limited Dramatisation" category of the award.

It was screened in Bermuda during BIFF 2000.
