Celebrate sight with Stella
Coming again with bursting patterns of colour is Stella Shakerchi.
Her show will open in the Edinburgh Gallery, at the Bermuda Society of Arts, today at 5.30 p.m.
"My intention is that it will be impossible to walk past the Edinburgh Gallery without being drawn into the room to see what all the colour is about," she said.
"Some of the pieces do represent dynamics in life, for example the lotus paintings and the canvases that look like waves or rock strata. But overall this show is simply about enjoying the visual, celebrating sight, and tuning into the uplifting effects of colour."
During a previous show held at Rock Island she found that it was very popular.
"People just love the vibrance and feel energised by the shapes," said Ms Shakerchi.
"It is all oil on canvas, and the pieces range in size from ten inches up to about five feet square. It was amazing fun working on this show, usually the process is a tidy methodical one, with a neat studio at all times.
"For a lot of the other shows I also painted on location, so the studio was calm. But this time it's been chaos, paint everywhere, several on the go at once, ideas that I suddenly decide I have to try out right then, even if it was 3 a.m.
"My friends were getting worried; I'd disappear mysteriously for days on end, I stopped letting them visit because it meant I'd have to tidy up, and they'd say, 'tidy up what ? the hydrochloric peroxide?'.
"What with frequent visits to the hardware store for turpentine, my Iraqi surname, and the mad stare from working through the night, I can hardly blame them for being suspicious. More art and less bombs, that's my motto."
She said he favourite piece in the show has to be her magenta lotus.
"Because it has things in there that you can see if you want to, but it is also beautiful to look at in its own right. I haven't come across anyone who hasn't gasped with delight when they see it. And that's what it's all about isn't it?"
Her show runs until August 17.
The Open Member's Show is in the Onions Gallery.
