Come party with the Island's DJs

Tickets are selling fast for the big DJ party of the year...the tenth anniversary celebration for Bermuda's top radio station, Power 95, at Southampton Princess Hotel tomorrow night.

The station's deejays - Keevil (The Captain) Burgess, Don Bassett, Wayne Lottimore, Radigun, Brother Jack and Cousin Juicy - will be honoured during the night as other local deejays such as DJ Youngals, Craig (Bubbles) Darrell, Funk Master Bin and Funky Flea spin the tunes from 10 p.m.

"All of these deejays are renowned, each one of them is going to play a different type of music," explained Gina Spence-Farmer who is involved in special projects at Bermuda Broadcasting and hosts Youth Talk.

"It's a semi formal event, we'll have a big birthday cake and there will be giveaways. Comedians Jah and Nadanja will also be there."

As the radio announcement have already warned, "18 and under can stay home". "We are definitely hitting the mature crowd," said Mrs. Spence-Farmer.

"Our announcers are mature men so it's not like a `session' and people who probably haven't been out in years will want to be out. We're really catering to those who went to Galaxy, Four Aces, Disco 40, Flavours.

"We are looking to recreate the disco, with the ball and the lights. People can look to have a great time, especially people like myself who don't go out much but certainly used to `hang' and remember what it was like to have a good time without the violence."

Tickets will be available at 27th Century Boutique and Music World at $25 each, $20 for Power 95 Interactive members.

"Tickets are going extremely well and we're not encouraging people to pay at the door," warned Mrs. Spence-Farmer.

The tenth anniversary celebration begins tonight with a one hour programme on Power 95 at 6 p.m. involving the likes of Sparky Lightbourne, Knolly Robinson and Funk Master Bin who were involved with the old disco clubs decades ago at places like Galaxy, Touch, Spinning Wheel, Four Aces and Flavours.

Power 95 Interactive is a membership drive that already has close to 1,000 members in its first three months. Members are entitled to all sorts of perks and can win weekly and monthly prizes, including youth cruises.

"Every month, at the end of the month, we do a grand prize and there are other prizes such as gift certificates and grocery vouchers," said Mrs. Spence-Farmer who is also working on that project.

"Power 95 caters to a wide audience, we had a survey done two years ago and Power 95 was voted the number one station Islandwide, and Keevil just won the Bermuda Gold Award for the most popular DJ. All of that is reflecting in our membership and membership is still available."

Forms are available at 27th Century, Music World or Dub City and the cost is $21 for three months and then $7 a month after that. People will also be eligible for free membership on the night of the celebration, said Mrs. Spence-Farmer.
