Courtney's front and centre in St. George's
Courtney Trott, full of vigour and enthusiasm, is one of the busiest men in St. George's thanks to his role as office administrator of the Corporation.
In the summer of 1989, he began working there as a summer student and little did he know that following his college graduation in 1998 he would be doing his current job.
He obtained a Bachelor's degree in finance from Morehouse College, Atlanta. He said leaving there and coming back to Bermuda and landing the job was perfect timing.
"I love my work with the Corporation. I do a wide range of tasks such as accounts payable and receivable for water and I am the recording secretary for wharves. We sort out the building applications, the parks, streets and the sewage.
"Also I rent out the cruise ship terminals and town hall for various functions," he said.
His favourite aspects of work involve organising different events which the town hosts such as the Santa Claus Parade; he says it's striking contrast from his normal day of number crunching.
"It thrills me to see the kids react to Santa in such a positive and warm way. They love it, especially the candy! The town always looks especially festive then too.
"It is always a challenge to ensure that our special events take off without any hitches and I do my best to represent St. George's in the most favourable way possible," he said.
Mr. Trott feels that St. George's has come a long way over the years and that it is improving all the time.
"I would love to see the old Holiday Inn Hotel open again. It would revitalise the town year round. The cruise ship passengers are appreciated but it seems that they leave here and head for Dockyard. We need tourists to patronise our restaurants and shops.
"We do need more nightly entertainment for tourists. All of those old entertainers like the Talbot Brothers are here no longer so we need to encourage younger musical groups to play Island music."
One of the things Mr. Trott appreciates about his job is the unpredictability factor as he says that no two days are ever the same.
"The pace of life is a bit slower in St. George's. Sometimes when I observe the tourists they seem like they are in a dream state. Some of them even do a little sleep walking as they meander in the middle of the roads without any fear. The locals are good about looking out for them."
Mr. Trott, known as a kind and helpful person, cares about others and is a volunteer Fireman at the St. George's Fire Station. In his spare time he plays cricket at Cleveland County Cricket Club at Devil's Hole, Smith's Parish.
A father with a nine month old son, Isiah, Mr. Trott says that parenthood is challenging, rewarding and that he is enjoying every moment.
