Former resident wins bridge tourney
Bermudians continue to shine at the 2007 Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament. In the Two-session Championship Pairs held on Monday and Tuesday evening local players took four of the top seven places in the A section, with Alan Douglas and Sven Pride topping the list in third place, followed by Jean Johnson and Canadian Allan Graves (fourth), David Cordon and John Burville (fifth) and Joe Wakefield and Bill Tucker (seventh).
The event was won by by former Bermuda resident Bill Souster playing with American Jim Linhart.
Souster, who now lives in Wales, taught many bridge classes at the Bermuda Bridge Club during his time on the Island.
Cordon and Burville won the B section and Wendy and Richard Gray placed second in the B section and won the C section.
Vera Petty and Roman Smolski, playing with Canadians Jade and Karen Barrett, won the first Compact Knockout Teams event of the week.
With around 300 visitors from overseas attending the event, boosting the January tourism numbers, it is clear that Bermuda can hold its own at bridge in an international field.
