Get ready for a volcanic start to the New Year

Cool sounds: Founder-members of Chewstick (from left) Gavin (Sundjata) Smith, Najib (Tanzaoui) Chentouf and Owen (Omega 9) Millett entertain during a typical open mike night at the Paradise Lounge. This weekend Chewstick marks its first birthday with a special celebration.

The promoters of the Bermuda Music and Dramatic Society?s New Year?s Eve Parties and the Fort Hamilton Halloween Party are bringing the partygoer an even larger and NYE event.

This year Volcanic Productions presents the News Year?s Eve 2005 at B.A.A. (Bermuda Athletic Association), on Woodlands Road, Pembroke.

After two highly successful New Year?s parties at Bermuda Music and Dramatic Society (BMDS), Jon Legere and his partner Matthew Strong are at it again, however this time they have taken the event to a whole new level.

The duo have said all aspects have been covered and people are coming out of the woodwork with ideas and lending a hand to participate in this event.

?It?s so exciting that so many people want to be a part of it,? said Mr. Strong.

?We have one of the top entertainers in the world headlining the evening, with local artists, and visual artists on board ? it?s going to be such a great community event.?

Headlining the night is world renowned artist Kid Koala, from Montreal.

The emcee has toured with the likes of the Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Jack Johnston, Ben Harper, Radiohead to name just a few.

?Not only is he one of the world?s best known ?turntablists? Eric San a.k.a. Kid Koala also creates his own animations to add as backdrops to his musical genius,? said Mr. Legere.

?The guy is simply amazing. It doesn?t matter what musical genre your into ? once you see Kid Koala perform live he will win you over.?

Returning from New York City is The Butcha, who has played in all of Manhattans most notable venues, raised the level of the Halloween Party this year at Fort Hamilton.

?Phil Moffa (The Butcha) had everyone dancing and it wasn?t to the electric slide,? laughs Mr. Legere.

Now, if that is not enough ? the local talent are outstanding ? and the Chewstick Band will open the night with their Neo Griot Funk.

?The best thing about Chewstick,? said Mr. Strong, ?Is that they have taken an international sound, and they have created something so unique, so local that it would make all of us proud.

?The band has come such along way since their conception several years ago and the energy that surrounds them rubs off on everyone.

?The ten-piece band promises to tear up the evening with more funk and soul.? Colt 45 a.k.a. James Legere makes his debut with enough reggae classics to play till next year and with over 40,000 tunes at his disposal any reggae fan, young or old will not be disappointed.

?What an honour to play tunes with such other artists,? says Colt 45, Mr. Legere?s brother.

And the entertainment will continue with MC Pimp Zilla, who returns from Washington DC, to host the evening.

?Daniel Frith a.k.a. Pimp Zilla has been acting and doing stand-up comedy in the US capital and has received a large amount of positive response,? said Mr. Strong.

?Variety Magazine has called Daniel Frith ?a hoot? and the Washington Post has said he was ?Superb...serene sense of mischief with a laid-back instinct?.??

One of Bermuda?s most treasured local artists Wand former Trimingham?s and Smith?s window designer, Will Collieson has been working on a spectacular chandelier for the evening. However, the promoters will not give away the surprise before the evening, instead, you have to show up to the event to find out.

?I will tell you this,? says Mr. Strong, ?It?s going to give the onion in St. George?s a run for its money.?

Also joining the list of emcees, DJs, and comics, is New York guest video artist who will bring visuals in for the evening.

?The Washingmachine is an underground film artist who recently released the soon to be cult classic ?Brain Train?,? said Mr. Legere.

?This artist will be responsible for lighting up the evening with visuals, which will be shown on several projectors.?

Taking a step back in town, the event will also have break dancers, who will be out in full form to energise the crowd. Volcanic has asked anyone who claims they can break dance to email them at .

?If you can breakdance and prove that you can, we will give you a complimentary free ticket.? says Mr Legere, ?So dust off those shoes and break out the ?worm?.?

The venue has been outfitted with tents, chimineas and carpeting donated by Triminghams.

?It is not on the field so ladies you can still wear your high-heels, provided you can keep up with the dancing,? said Mr. Legere.

?A lounge tent will be provided for those that want to rest or enjoy their champagne. So, to squash any rumours ? this party is fully weatherproof.

?There is a full service bar offering low and high end liquors. A champagne bar fully stocked to accommodate all patrons, and a shooters bar that dares partygoers to spin the wheel of hotness and press their luck with top shelf shooters donated by Goslings. There is also a designated drivers programme in place for the responsible driver.?

Security could not be tighter as Champion security guards will be there in numbers to maintain control and several Police officers will patrol the door.

?We?ve never had a problem at any of our events and we would like to keep it that way,? said Mr. Strong.

?The safety of all patrons is our number one priority.?

There is no dress code and you can come in your birthday suit, said Mr. Legere.

?It?s not at all pretentious and we encourage people to come in their formal gear with a pair of sneakers. The only thing I recommend is that you bring your dancing shoes.?

Tickets are the best deal in town hands down, $50 in advance and $60 at the door. Each ticket includes two complimentary drinks.

?You can?t beat our price. With all the great entertainment lined up and the attention to detail in the d?cor, there isn?t a better deal in town,? said Mr. Strong.

?However we have sold out in the last two years, so we encourage people to take advantage of the in advanced tickets to ensure entry.

?A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Committee of 25 for handicapped children and The BMDS Charitable Trust. They are great organisations.?

The aim of Volcanic is to bring an element of global high quality to our beautiful Island.

?I can?t wait to here the crowds reaction and energy,? said Mr. Strong. ?This is how New Years Eve should be ? a celebration of life.?
