Gunpowder plot: an explosive drama
n Tuesday evenings at Tucker House, Water Street, St. George?s The Bermuda National Trust is meshing its history with Jargan Theatre Enterprises and it is all very educational and entertaining! The interactive plays are wonderful and cultural ways of learning and being entertained on Bermuda history.
The distinctive strong and eloquent voice of Mother Tucker, played by Connie Dey, captivates the audience as they hold on to her every word. As a dutiful wife and mother she is concerned about possible family involvement.
?During my 30 years of working with the National Trust I?ve admired the magnificent portrait of my character, Ann Butterfield Tucker, wife of Colonel Henry Tucker, and mother of President Henry Tucker, that hangs on the wall in Tucker House.
?Now, suddenly, I?m trying to bring her to life! It?s an awesome responsibility, but, I?m loving it,? said Mrs. Dey.
The cast of actors do a splendid job of performing the history. It comes alive before your eyes and the Tucker Family?s reputation is endangered by speculation of who stole the gun powder as the Gunpowder plot melodramatically unfolds.
Join Henry Jr, Franny, Mother Tucker and Governor Bruere as you become the sleuth while sipping wine in the gardens Remember to listen out for the clues from Joe and Abby, the young Tucker slaves, as they share all the family secrets. One lucky sleuth will win the nightly prize. Just sitting in the elegant drawing room observing the actors and absorbing the history is a memorable experience. The Tuckers were a vibrant and interesting family and certainly they are portrayed as such.

@EDITRULE:Background on the Tucker Family and The Gunpowder Plot:
The Tuckers are one of Bermuda?s oldest and most distinguished families. The first Tucker to arrive on the Island was Daniel, who came out from Kent in 1616 to serve as the Colony?s second governor.
Later he was followed by two nephews, George and Henry, who settled the extensive Tucker holding in Southampton.
There, in the middle of the most fertile planting land in Bermuda, was built the family home known as The Grove, where President Henry Tucker was born in 1742. He was the eldest son of Colonel Henry Tucker, one of the colony?s most prominent citizens at the time.
President Henry?s father, the Colonel, was alleged to have been part of the conspiracy. Much anguish and crisis followed him at this time. The powder was stolen because the Continental Congress had declared a ban on exports to all British colonies not taking part in the revolt. The 13 mainland colonies were the granary for Bermuda, and the ban was a shrewd blow. An unofficial Bermuda delegation to Philadelphia asked that the ban be lifted, but the Congress refused - unless Bermuda supplied the powder in the colony?s magazine.
This the Bermudians did and the ban was eventually lifted.
The theft of the powder led to a British warship stationed in Bermuda and there were clashes between British seamen and Bermudians.
President Henry Tucker was one of the few able to work with both sides to promote internal peace. Tuesday evening, St. George?s Market Night, theatre starts at 7 p.m. in the Tucker House museum for the sum of $20 which includes a glass of wine in the garden. The group also offers tea at Verdmont every Saturday at 2 p.m.
