Legal students receive scholarship boost

A financial boost from Appleby, Spurling and Kempe will help push six law students through their educations toward a legal career.

The law firm awarded five bursaries and a scholarship to graduate students who are pursuing a legal career this autumn in Great Britain and in Bermuda - Colm Singleton, Angela Atherden, Julia Jane Saltus, Anita Hewey, Wendy Richardson and Sharon Suess.

Colm Singleton was awarded a $25,000-per-year scholarship after recently completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jurisprudence at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

He received a Distinction in Law Moderation in 1999 and was elected as New College Scholar. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University and has studied French in Paris, and Renaissance, Baroque and Roman art in Italy.

In addition, he was a judge at the World University Debate Championships, and represented Bermuda at the World Schools Debating Championships.

Angela Atherden holds a Bachelor of Law degree from Buckingham University, having previously completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at St. Mary's University.

Wendy Richardson is enrolled in the University of Kent at Bermuda College where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Law degree. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from St. Mary's University.

Julia Jane Saltus completed her Bachelor of Law at the University of Buckingham and will attend the Bar Vocational Course at the University of West England in September.

Anita Hewey will also be commencing the Bar Vocational Course this September but at BPP Law School. She holds a Bachelor of Law at Buckingham University.

And in September, Sharon Suess will attend University of Northumbria at Newcastle to complete the Legal Practice Course. She holds a Bachelor in Law from the University of Hull.
